[DEVELOPMENT]
Checking the weather on your phone may feel trivial, but it subtly shapes your mood each morning. Even a quick glance at rain or sunlight can influence how you start the day.
Weather Cereal is a mobile-focused web app that turns this routine into a calming ritual. With tranquil 3D scenes and gentle Zen-inspired sounds, it blends practical weather updates with a moment of quiet to support emotional well-being.
Challenge
Most weather apps are designed for utility: check the forecast, move on. Users typically spend just 20–60 seconds, yet this brief moment quietly shapes their emotional state. Checking the forecast becomes a psychological transition — the shift from rest to readiness. If this moment influences the entire day, the question becomes: how can a weather app lift someone’s mood in such a short span?
Approach
To positively impact the user’s mood within seconds, the experience must be visually and sonically rich. The app is therefore designed as a mobile-first, multisensory environment inspired by the stillness of Japanese zen gardens (枯山水 / karesansui). Its purpose is to offer a calming, atmospheric pause that fits naturally into a morning routine that lasts less than a minute.
Outcome
While delivering clear, stress-free forecasts, the app enriches the micro-moment with data-driven 3D scenes, gentle motion, ambient nature sounds, and a minimalist UI. Together, these elements create a soothing yet energizing experience that subtly raises the user’s mood, setting a more positive tone for the day ahead.

VISUAL DESIGN
Nature sits at the core of the app’s experience. Inspired by Japanese zen gardens, the 3D scene brings a sense of calm through soft komorebi-like lighting and gentle, slowed-down motion. Petals drift lightly, icons fall softly, and depth-of-field guides attention without overwhelming the view. Together, these elements create a quiet visual rhythm designed to ease the mind at a glance.
AUDIO DESIGN
Weather-based audio deepens the sensory atmosphere. Natural sounds—wind, water, birds—shift subtly according to real-time conditions. Shared base layers keep the sound consistent and soothing, while weather-specific cues add nuance. This pairing of audio and visuals strengthens the app’s meditative, zen-like ambience.

COHESIVE ICONS
Clarity and calm guide the icon design. Custom, minimal icons unify the look across 3D scenes, forecast data, and loading states. For precipitation, nine distinct icon levels replace conventional graphs, offering a quick, intuitive way to understand changing weather without breaking the visual serenity.

LOCATION AND FORECAST
To enhance everyday usability, the app automatically detects the user’s location via geolocation. For added flexibility, users can also manually enter any city name to check weather conditions globally, making the experience both convenient and customizable. One of the app’s core functions is its 48-hour forecast. Users access it easily by tapping an icon. To enhance the experience, a scroll-based 3D weather animation adds a subtle but fun layer to user interaction.
